Garmin Nuvifone to get to market first in Asia

Published by at 5:10 pm under Garmin,GPS & Sat-Nav

Last Friday at the Garmin annual shareholder meeting, Garmin’s CEO Cliff Pemble said that the Garmin-ASUS Nuvifone will get to the market first in Asia late June or beginning of July “in the open market” (meaning with no wireless operator). However he did not provide any precise agenda for the actual launch of this long delayed product in the United States and in Europe, only saying that the company is “in the second phase of testing with field testing”.

In addition, an ASUS spokesperson admitted during a press conference at the Computex trade show last week that a Garmin-ASUS phone with an Android operating system will come to the market no later than the first quarter of 2010. Therefore it would not be surprising to see Garmin dropping its customized Linux operating system (used on the Nuvifone G60) which, admitted Pemble, was one of the reasons of the delay.
