The connection to Facebook and Twitter allows with a simple icon tap to post users current position, destination, and ETA without navigation interruption. NAVIGON MyRoutes, a feature that has been previously available to high end NAVIGON PNDs, analyzes driving habits, patterns, location, time/day and provides up to three routes clearly displayed in-map with ETA, distance and driving times for each.

The 3D in-map views, obtained from free NASA’s height and terrain data (from the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission), enable intuitive orientation of surrounding environment, and what lies ahead with digital landscape elevations, shadows, and geographic images. Panorama View 3D is integrated in-map, independent from the phone’s data connection. This feature will be available via an In App Purchase. Pricing has not been defined yet.

With this future release NAVIGON shows a way to compensate price drops in the iPhone navigation space in adding in-app purchases of some new features. In the United Kingdom postcode navigation is an add on (GBP 0.59) as well as traffic in the US ($19.99) and the upcoming 3D terrain view.

NAVIGON seems to have well assimilated the rules of the App Store: innovation, regular updates and monetization through in-app purchases. In comparison its main competitor TomTom (despite its much bigger brand) is only playing with price reduction to stay ahead in the race.

Ilam is situated in the cold mountainous region of Iran at a height of 1319 m above the mean sea level. Although this city is surrounded by mountains, its climate is also affected by deserts from the west and the south. This region presents a highly variable annual weather profile. Heavy showers or heavy snow in the winter and dusty, hot, dry weather in the summer are normal for this region.

The name Ilam usually conjures up images of war, destruction and poverty. Ilam bore the brunt of the Iraqi attacks during the eight years of the Iran-Iraq war. But if you visit Ilam, what attracts your attention more than the scars of war and depravation is its unspoilt natural scenery and a profusion of historical remains which are scattered all over the province.

These were mostly built during the Sassanian era, third to seventh centuries A.D. They include the remnants of a vast historical city spread over 200 hectares, numerous fortresses of various size as well as several bridges, shrines and fire temples.

The splendid natural scenery of Ilam, located in the heart of Zagros Mountains, varies from imposing cliffs to slopes covered in a thick canopy of varied trees, as well as valleys, passes made through the mountain gaps, meadows, and grazing lands.

The majority of the population are nomadic tribes whose livelihood depends on rearing sheep. Whichever part of the province you cross and whatever route you take, there are always flocks of grazing sheep, with tribesmen in colourful clothes tending them.

The address input is through the entry of postal code or city name, and there is smart speller for flawless input. Smart speller displays the possible combinations as you enter.

There is an impressive list of points-of-interest loaded into it. Thus, at a single click you can navigate to the nearest theatres, hotels and so on. You can even mark your favourite locations on the maps. And, with the clever parking feature, it can show you the nearby parking slot too. Navigon 3310 max Europe 22 Portable Sat Nav is almost similar to the 3300 max, except for the TMC service.

Besides having a new version of Maps that fills the whole screen, the iPad has access to almost all of the app store content – but nevertheless these applications will need some work if they don’t want to look to pixelated on an Ipad. More importantly, most of the applications built for the pocketable iPhone might simply not be relevant for the tablet.

UI and use case challenge for LBS developers
This new product is going to be an interesting challenge for location-based services developers. There is indeed everything that count to offer great positioning, enough battery life to run for hours and, obviously, a very large display.

However, the use of this product is going to be radically different from a laptop or an iPhone/iPod Touch. Unless you drive a Humvee, you are not going to put it on your dashboard, so exit in-car navigation. Because you don’t have it in your pocket all the time, checking it to find your direction when walking on the street is not going to happen either.

Another point is that many consumers will buy the $499 version that only has Wi-Fi, so the applications developed will have to be able to work without continuous connectivity. That obviously raises the point of the GPS – and GPS antenna – quality in standalone mode: how good it performs will have to be seen, especially when knowing the notoriously bad GPS antenna fitted into the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

The 9.7-inch screen offered by the iPad is probably what will drive the biggest innovation. Unlike in a smartphone today where maps and menus, or text are on different screens, the iPad display has enough size to show both a map and other elements: be it text, pictures or video. The size of the screen also possibly allows to make drawings and to add notes to maps, something that innovative developers could leverage for specific applications.

All in all the future use cases of this device and the potential for new type of user interfaces open a field of possibility, but contemplating these has however a pre-requisite: will the iPad sell?

Already, Nokia claims to have one-upped Google in the crucial area of pre-loaded maps. While Google Maps Navigation requires a data connection, Ovi Maps uses a combination of pre-loaded and online maps, but can load directions even in a dead zone. When it does need to load information, Nokia says it’s more efficient than Google’s application, requiring only 200 KB of data over a 12-mile stretch of road compared with 2 MB for an Android phone.

For the big GPS companies, preloaded maps are particularly troublesome. Being able to get directions without an Internet connection is one of the last advantages a dedicated GPS device has over smartphones. Nokia and Google have already duplicated voice navigation, and they already offer free directory listings and traffic, which aren’t free on all GPS devices.

All that remains is for the other smartphone competitors to jump on the trend. Google has said “you’ll have to speak to Apple about availability” of Google Voice Navigation, which makes me think Apple is developing a service of its own instead of ceding more of the iPhone to Google (Apple did buy a map company, Placebase, last year for reasons yet unknown). BlackBerry has a robust turn-by-turn GPS application for free, but no voice navigation. I’m not sure what’s happening with Windows Mobile, but a Bing Maps Navigation is certainly plausible.

If free navigation apps become available on all major smartphones, GPS makers will only be able to pray that people hang on to their flip- and feature-phones forever.
