It is located 850 kilometers (500 miles) east of Tehran, at the center of the Razavi Khorasan Province (<strong>\u0627\u0633\u062a\u0627\u0646 \u062e\u0631\u0627\u0633\u0627\u0646 \u0631\u0636\u0648\u06cc<\/strong>) close to the borders of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Its population was 2,749,374 at 2011 census.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/images\/cities\/iran-mashad-map.jpg\" alt=\"Iran Mashad map\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now Mashhad is notably known as the resting place of the Imam Reza (\u0627\u0645\u0627\u0645 \u0631\u0636\u0627)(Ali ibn Musa al-Rida). A shrine was later built there to commemorate the Imam, which in turn gave rise to increasing demographic development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/images\/cities\/Imam-Reza-shrine.jpg\" alt=\"Imam Reza A.S. shrine\" width=\"416\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The city is located at 36.20\u00ba latitude and 59.35\u00ba east longitude, in the valley of the Kashaf River near Turkmenistan, between the two mountain ranges of Binalood (\u0628\u06cc\u0646\u0627\u0644\u0648\u062f) and Hezar-masjed (\u0647\u0632\u0627\u0631\u0645\u0633\u062c\u062f). The city benefits from the proximity of the mountains, having very cold winters, pleasant springs, mild summers, and beautiful autumns. It is only about 250 km (156 miles) from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/images\/cities\/Ferdowsi-Tomb-mashhad.jpg\" alt=\"Ferdowsi's Tomb in Tous near Mashhad\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The city is the administrative centre of Mashhad County (or the shahrestan of Mashhad) as well as the somewhat smaller district (bakhsh) of Mashhad. The city itself, excluding parts of the surrounding bakhsh and shahrestan, is divided into 13 smaller administrative units, with a total population of almost 2,5 million.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/images\/cities\/Ferdowsi.jpg\" alt=\"Ferdowsi, Tous near Mashhad\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mashhad consists mainly of people of Iranian descent.
