This was a central market for the city, often becoming covered or indoor as the years went by, and serving both local businessmen and families as well as travelling merchants. As they grew, they could often take over a whole neighbourhood, and have a hierarchy of avenues, streets, corridors, alleys and pathways, with halls, intersections and major chambers as nodes.<\/p>\n<p>In this multimedia report, we are guided through the great ancient bazaar of Tabriz (<strong>\u0628\u0627\u0632\u0627\u0631 \u062a\u0628\u0631\u06cc\u0632<\/strong>), one of the largest cities of Iran. Its residents are now hoping it will be registered as a World Heritage Site in 2011. While many other town and city bazaars in Iran may have lost their original function as the main trade hub of their locality, and have turned into attractions, in Tabriz the bazaar has kept its original purpose and many of the features from the middle ages, Tamerlane\u2019s era and the last few centuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4204  aligncenter\" title=\"Tabriz bazar, Iran\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/tabriz-bazar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/i\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/tabriz-bazar.jpg 595w, http:\/\/www.iranmap.com\/i\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/tabriz-bazar-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jadidonline.com\/images\/stories\/flash_multimedia\/Tabriz_bazzar_eng_test\/bazzar_high.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>High speed<\/strong><\/a><strong> |\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jadidonline.com\/images\/stories\/flash_multimedia\/Tabriz_bazzar_eng_56\/bazzar_low.html\" target=\"_blank\">Low speed<\/a><\/strong>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nEvocative yet practical names of the past greet us, seeming to challenge any assumption of a modern monopoly of the concept of shopping malls, centres or precincts: \u2018caravanserai\u2019 (a central courtyard for the pack animals and caravans, surrounded by warehouses and traders\u2019 shop fronts, now often abbreviated to \u2018sara\u2019), \u2018hojra\u2019 (<strong>\u0647\u062c\u0631\u0647<\/strong>) (a cell, kiosk, office or small shop), \u2018rasteh\u2019 (<strong>\u0631\u0627\u0633\u062a\u0647<\/strong>)(a row of such shops), \u2018chahar soo\u2019 (<strong>\u0686\u0647\u0627\u0631\u0633\u0648<\/strong>) (an intersection of two thoroughfares), \u2018teamcheh\u2019 (<strong>\u062a\u06cc\u0645\u0686\u0647<\/strong>) (a small version of the caravanserai, often a chamber) and \u2018dalan\u2019 (<strong>\u062f\u0627\u0644\u0627\u0646<\/strong>) (alleys and pathways connecting all these together, lined with shops).
