Augmentra enters US market with outdoor maps
British outdoor navigation software editor Augmentra has signed an agreement with National Geographic Maps to offer their United States TOPO! maps on its ViewRanger application. “ViewRanger users can select specific areas of National Geographic maps and then download them direct to their mobile phones. GPS-enabled handsets show a dynamic map display with the use’s location clearly marked. Easy download of maps and data over-the-air will allow users to access content instantly, wherever they may be,” said Craig Wareham, co-founder of Augmentra.
Augmentra has already deals in place with many mapping agencies across Europe which allows ViewRanger’s users to download maps for Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, The Netherlands, parts of Italy, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland.
Nevertheless, there is a big obstacle for Augmentra on the American market. So far the company has only developed its software on the Symbian operating system which only represents a tiny market segment in the United States. Having maps is good, but having phones to use them could be even better.
