TomTom introduces map subscription service in U.S.

PND maker TomTom last week announced its Map Update Service, allowing its U.S. customers to access one year of quarterly map updates for a one-time fee starting at $39.80 for the TomTom ONE device.

All map updates are available for download through TomTom HOME, TomTom’s free desktop software application. New maps become available every quarter for the duration of a user’s subscription, and each map update incorporates all changes in the road network that have been validated by Tele Atlas. Subscribers will be alerted to download the latest map update as soon as they are available.

With this announcement TomTom follows the trend started by NAVIGON one year ago, then by Garmin to offer map updates under a subscription model.
